Chris Yonge and Dave Britton founded MakersFactory in October and within weeks they are offering classes, with no ads but only word of mouth.
This first makerspace in Santa Cruz has a space of 800-square-foot, equipped with do-it-yourself building equipment and open to all people who like to design and make things. Their first 3D printer among all the equipment was a $600 kit that Yonge built for demonstrating open source hardware. But this weekend they are going to welcome a new family member - a Z Corp.650 3D printer.
According to Yonge, the most popular class so far has been 'Principles of 3-D Printing,' a three-hour evening introductory class that costs $79. Other classes start at $49 - such as the two-hour business oriented courses - and run up to $149 for three-day comprehensive workshops. MakersFactory also offers yearly memberships for $499 that include access to the workspace and equipment as well 50 percent off classes.
