Austin, TX based Lynx Laboratories has created an inexpensive and handheld 3D capture device, Lynx A Camera, which can digitize the shape and motion of what it sees. It is the world's first point-and-shoot 3D camera.
Lynx A Camera is a light, plastic device shaped like a tablet. It has specialized, front-mounted optics including a 640x480 color camera and a 3D sensor. On the front, there's a large, 14" color LCD screen for an instant and accurate view of imaging results. You can navigate your captured models using joysticks, just like a video game controller. And its battery can last for four hours.
The camera does three things: scene modeling, object modeling, and motion capture. The goal is to capture high quality content in just some minutes.
It allows makers to image and replicate objects without touching modeling software, simply just walk around the object of interest and it slowly carves out a watertight 3D model of the object. The models are accurate to below a centimeter, full-color, and to scale.
Then you can use installed desktop software to output renderings, take measurements and produce stereograms. The output formats include PLY, OBJ, STL, XYZ, JPS, BVH etc.
Camera Specifications:
- Size: 11.5" x 8" x 1" (29.2 x 20.3 x 2.5 cm)
- Controls: Two joysticks, Four buttons
- Screen: 14" LCD screen
- Processor: Intel Core i5 2.6GHz
- Disk Space: 500GB
- I/O: 2x USB 3.0, HDMI out
- Software Updates: Ethernet Port
- Weight: 6 lbs (2.72 kg)
Lynx Laboratories has received several awards including the 1st Place Idea2Product (I2P) Texas, 1st Place I2P Global, Top 10 Dell Innovators and National Science Foundation Small Business Innovation Research Funding.
Lynx Laboratories launched the Lynx A camera on Kickstarter. For 3D printing enthusiasts the company has a special LYNX for Makers: The Lynx A with the object modeling feature for $1,799. For 3D artists who want to have the camera with object and scene modeling and motion capture, the price is $2,699.
