Imagine being able to making a 3D model using only a depth camera and your browser, and in moments your fully-textured 3D printable model could load on your web browser. Stockholm, Sweden based Kinect@Home spin off Volumental is creating a 3D Scan-to-Print web app that could create amazing 3D models for printing.
Volumental's browser-based 3D printable model creator is the world's first and it allows users to create usable, shareable 3D models of your living room sofa, grandfather, or a kitchen appliance all without leaving your browser window.
Your 3D model will load in the app, and with some small adjustments, the water-tight, printable model is then downloaded to your computer or sent off to an online printing service, ready to print.
This new app will be perfect for those objects that you've always wanted to scan but were inaccessible due to 3D modeling difficulties and the restrictions of your own computer or desktop 3D scanners.
The Volumental team launches today a Kickstarter campaign to hire a dedicated full-time developer for this project as well as upgrades needed in server and processing hardware. The goal is to raise $20,000 funding and it is estimated that the app will take 3 months to develop if everything goes smoothly.
