The 18-month-old 3D model sharing service Sketchfab has raised $2m in a fundraising round led by Balderton Capital, with participation from Partech Ventures, Borealis Ventures and David Cohen, founder of TechStars.
Based in Paris and New York, Sketchfab is an online publishing platform which allows tinkerers and designers to upload and share their 3D scans and models. Users can publish and embed their interactive 3D models on any webpage in real time without having to use plugins. It's just like youtube, but for 3D files. Users can also follow and contact 3D artists and request copies of models or hire 3D modellers from the site.
An average of 300 object files are uploaded daily. The site has grown quickly to almost 100,000 users to date with a total of 70,000 3D files.
Sketchfab will use the funding round to scale its platform, expand its team which now employs 10 people and continue to develop and improve its product.

"We're still at the beginning and a long road lies ahead. It means we can continue building the best in-browser 3D viewing technology and platform. An interactive 3D viewer which is universal, fast, reliable, easy to use and faithful to the 3D content it displays." CEO Alban Denoyel said in a blog post.
Bernard Liautaud, partner at Balderton Capital added: "The 3D design industry is changing rapidly and Sketchfab are at the forefront of this space. We believe 3D content will play an increasingly important role online in sectors from entertainment to retail."
