Claimed to be China 's first smart 3D printer, the AOD Artist developed by the AOD 3D Printing Ltd has raised 1.2 million RMB ($195,000) in less than three hours on Sunday evening.
At about 9pm yesterday, Yuan Dawei, founder of AOD 3D Printing, a spin-off company of China's top-ranked university, Tsinghua University, posted a message on the WeChat (sort of Whatsapp in China) platform about crowdfunding for AOD Artist 3D printer. In just three hours, the company has raised 1.2 million RMB. On Monday morning, the project has raised more than 3 million RMB.
The team has developed four sets of intelligent system for AOD Artist 3D printer, from the Android based operating system to the document management, 3D printing system to material control system. It features an intuitive 6-inch touch screen interface directly on the printer.
AOD Smart Cloud, the cloud-based storage technology is developed for file storage, sharing, and remote printing. The AOD Smart Traveler includes auto-sensing and transmission system for automatic filament feeding.
In addition, the AOD Smart Printer, a slicing and control software for the AOD Artist, allows you to convert a digital 3D model into printing instructions with one click. It slices the model, generates toolpaths to fill them and calculates the amount of material to be extruded to make 3D printing as easy and streamlined as possible.

On Dec.5, 2013 the team launched the AOD Artist 3D printer in Tsinghua University, and on Dec.12, 2013, the National Science and Technology Department has awarded the team 500,000 RMB ($81,000) innovation funding.
The AOD Artist 3D printer is priced at RMB28,800 ($4,660, €3,343) and is taking pre-orders now. The company is also working on a series of 3D printers for kids, schools, universities and home users.
