At the HAXLR8R hardware accelerator demo day Monday, startup Kast3DP showed off its new Kast 3D printer, a stereolithography 3D printer that allows you to build high quality 3D plastic in a matter of hours. Stereolithography (SL) is one of oldest methods used to create 3D-printed objects. SLA 3D printer hardens liquid plastic (photopolymer) with an ultraviolet (UV) layer by layer and converts liquid plastic into solid objects.
Unlike other desktop SLA printers, the Kast 3D printer is claimed to be able to print 12 times faster than existing machines. Kast3DP, founded by Nirvana Jay and Compiler Liu, said their printer has "higher speed, bigger print volume, better precision", thanks to their patent-pending "retina casting" technology. The company said they have also made their own resin to control the print quality and keep the printing cost low.
The Kast 3D printer will be launched on Kickstarter soon. Suggested retail price is around $3,000, early bird Kickstarter backers are being offered it at $1,790.
