Sardauscan, developed by Belgium designer Fabio Ferretti, is probably the cheapest 3d scanner you can find online.
Ferretti has recently uploaded the schematics for this open source 3D scanner and guess what, you can simply build it for a cost of under $30.
"It could even cost $12 if you already have a hercule HD twist," adds Ferretti.
You can download all the files needed to build your own on Thingiverse. Here is the list of non-printed components:
- M3 Screws (16 and 20 mm)
- M4 Screws (12 ans 20 mm)
- 1x Chinese Arduino Nano (Chinese copy, $4)
- 1x Chinese Stepper Motor and controller ($5)
- 1 to 4 Line laser ($2.5 piece)
- 1x Hercule HD twist (15$)
- 20x20 profile
- Optional 3x 4mm roller ($0.3 piece)
- Total estimated price: $26.5 (1 laser) to $35 (4 lasers)
The software is writen in c# and winforms, and users will be allowed to add their own tasks via plugins, such as controller for camera, turntable and lasers. The source code can be found here.

Any requirements to the wiring? How sensitive to EMC is it? The wiring plan and other instructions should be more documented. The holes do not always fit the parts, minor rework is needed. The small nuts that are used on the bars should be bought as full metal parts. The plastic thinghies are too fragile. The connection from the laserheads and camera beam to the vertical bar is very vague. Should it rotate? Why? Is the manual available in docx so that it can be translated in English?

This is pretty cool, but honestly that model doesn't look anything like the cat. What's the point?
