While the 3D printing community may have been previously introduced to new filament types on a monthly - or even weekly - basis, the amount of research and development that companies both large and small have put into developing new filament types over the past year has resulted in new filament releases on a seemingly daily basis.
Among other filaments that have been released in the past week include a high-strength formula from Dutch startup Tiamet3D that’s made from a proprietary composite material that contains nano-particles to makes the material stronger, stiffer and more heat resistant than other filaments, a plant-based filament from Austria-based Saphium Biotechnology that the company claims is the first filament that is able to biodegrade within two months after being planted in soil, as well as an engineering-grade Glass Filled PLA filament from 3Dom USA that is both tougher and more flexible than existing PLA formulas.
Now, Chinese 3D printing filament manufacturer eSUN has officially launched their new ePC 3D printer filament, which has already attracted widespread attention thanks to its user-friendly qualities including high-strength properties, transparency, fire-resistance and environmentally-friendly formula.
To date, eSUN has developed a number of 3D printing supplies for special applications including wooden filament, PETG, bronze filament, color changing filament and ‘clean’ filament, among others.
“Since 3D printing technology has become more sophisticated today, FDM 3D printing continues to be among the most well-received methods of additive manufacturing due to the low-cost and convenience,” says the company (translated).
“For FDM 3D printer filaments, users are mainly concerned about the filaments being both high-quality and cost-effective - qualities that we focused on for the ePC filament.”
The ePC filament comes in natural color, is flame retardant to UL94: V-2 levels. It prints at temperatures of 235-260° C, and is available in 1.75 and 3.00mm diameters on 0.5 kg rolls.
To ensure that their new filament met the demands of even their toughest users, the company ran it through multiple tests including strength testing, heat distortion and transparency. After passing the tests with flying colors, the filament has been deemed as ideal for a range of user types including engineers and designers who will turn to 3D printing to create consumer product prototypes, hobby models, electronic accessories and more.
"In every development process for a new product, we always adhere to the development of new properties and the optimization of the material itself, emphasizing on the mobility in the use of the material, which will be beneficial to the final shape and can avoid the material waste caused by repeated tests," added an R&D representative from eSUN.
