We’ve covered quite a few amazing 3D printed Star Wars projects in the lead up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ release—which was already nearly two weeks ago. Yet much like an army of Storm Troopers, these impressive Star Wars-inspired 3D prints just keep on coming. The latest comes from Dutch modder Sander van der Velden, who’s entry for the MSI Pro Mod Season 3 competition is a massive, functional Venator-Class Star Destroyer that is almost perfectly move-accurate, yet still manages to encapsulate an entire gaming PC.
van der Velden, who goes by the username asphiax over on the MSI forum, constructed the frame out of custom laser-cut aluminum—a skill that he took over two years perfecting for this specific project. The majority of the other visible components, however, were entirely 3D printed. While the size is certainly note-worthy, it’s the attention to detail that takes this mod from a mere PC hardware case to a work of art in its own right. Everything, from the painstaking paint job right down to the tiny blinking lights, looks just like the Star Destroyer from the movies.
Surprisingly, the YAZI Venator-Class Star Destroyer was something of a ‘rush job’ for van der Velden. Just one week before he began the aluminum cutting process, he received a call informing him that MSI, a leading developer of gaming hardware, wanted to display his creation at the upcoming CES show in Las Vegas, meaning that he had to spend several extremely late nights relentlessly cutting, 3D printing, assembling, and painting in order to finish his masterpiece within a much shorter deadline than originally anticipated.
The hard work and long nights were certainly worth the effort, and as an entry in the MSI Pro Mod Season 3 Competition, this 3D printed Destroyer could very well win the passionate Star Wars fan and case modder a grand prize valued at $2,500. The contest challenges gamers to creatively conceal their MSI-brand motherboard and graphics card while fulfilling this year’s “Black and White” theme. Selected competitors will pass through three stages of evaluation, in which their projects will be judged based on creativity, overall design, and technique. A special jury prize for the best mod on a motherboard will take place between January 14th-28th.
“Inspired by and developed in cooperation with the world’s top PC modders, MSI has released the KRAIT GAMING series motherboards featuring classic black & white color scheme,” said the MSI contest organizers. “We have always appreciated the creative efforts of the PC modding community and brought MSI PRO MOD series since this year. Now, we are kicking off MSI PRO MOD Season 3. You are able to express your individuality and show off your skills.” The contest officially closes December 31st, 2015.
Though some commentors have questioned how well this large case can handle ventilation, it is undeniably very good-looking. You can check out van der Velder’s entire creation process (plus a ton of pictures) in his build log, or if you are lucky enough to attend CES in Las Vegas, you can see it in person thanks to MSI.
