Printing behemoth HP and professional services firm Deloitte are joining forces to implement HP’s 3D printing systems in large-scale manufacturing environments. Deloitte plans to flex its “global client reach” and other strengths as part of the alliance.

Partnerships between HP and other major companies hardly have the power to raise eyebrows these days. After all, we’ve already seen the printing giant—a relatively new participant in the 3D printing game—partner with Nike, Siemens, Evonik, BMW, and more over the last year or so.
But that’s not to say the Palo Alto company’s latest alliance—with global professional services company Deloitte—isn’t important.
If the companies themselves are to be believed, the new partnership will see HP and Deloitte aiming to conquer the $12 trillion global manufacturing industry. Shoot for the stars, as they say.
Announced today in London, the partnership will purportedly “accelerate the digital transformation of the global manufacturing industry,” starting with the implementation of HP’s 3D printing systems in “large-scale manufacturing environments.”
The “transformation” enabled by the 3D printing systems will involve companies being able to “accelerate product design and production, create more flexible manufacturing and supply chains, and optimize efficiency across the manufacturing lifecycle.”
“The Fourth Industrial Revolution is upon us,” commented HP President and CEO Dion Weisler. “No sector of the global economy is undergoing more radical transformation than the $12 trillion manufacturing market.”

Clearly, Weisler sees 3D printing as integral to that transformation, with HP playing up the technology’s power to lower costs, increase production speed and flexibility, erase distribution borders, and create new markets.
“Companies investing in digital reinvention are poised to outpace their peers,” Weisler added. “Building on our disruptive 3D printing technology, together with Deloitte we are focused on helping customers transform and win in this new era.”
Although Deloitte is better known for its work in finance, this isn’t the company’s first foray into additive manufacturing.
In addition to providing numerous reports and predictions about the industry over the years, the New York City-headquartered firm has previously worked with additive manufacturing giant 3D Systems.
Its work with HP will, however, be on a much larger scale. By attempting to sell HP’s Jet Fusion 3D printers to big manufacturers, Deloitte will have to make the most of what it describes as its “global client reach and deep manufacturing relationships, unrivaled digital operations experience, and proven excellence in supply chain transformation.”
Deloitte Global CEO Punit Renjen thinks the company is up to the task: “The digitalization of global manufacturing operations and practices will impact companies and consumers around the world, and 3D printing will play an important role in fundamentally changing manufacturing as we know it,” he said. “This alliance comprises two exceptional brands and brings together HP’s leading 3D printing platform with Deloitte’s digital manufacturing experience and global client reach.”
The alliance will purportedly combine Deloitte’s “business transformation expertise” with HP’s know-how in managed printing, device-as-a-service (DaaS), commercial mobility, and cyber-security, suggesting that the deal goes far beyond the Jet Fusion 3D printer.
The partnership will start in the U.S. only but will expand to other areas.
