3D Systems announced today that it has acquired Digital PlaySpace for an undisclosed amount. This is the 3D printer maker's fifth acquisition since December.
Digital PlaySpace bills itself as a game design and development studio that understands how to create and deliver engaging play across multiple platforms.
Currently Digital Playspace has two offerings: one is Digital Dollhouse, a virtual dollhouse where you can create your own perfect Victorian or modern Beachhouse by decorating photo-realistic 3D dollhouses with an array of items from wallpapers and paint to furniture and accessories. Digital Dollhouse is launched in 2008, and up to now over 6 million virtual rooms are created.
The second property is Dreamhouse Designer on Facebook. Dreamhouse Designer allows players to create multiple types of room by pulling in items from all over the web and sharing them with friends and family. Dreamhouse Designer has been referred to as "a gamefied Pinterest" and continues to attract new fans every day.
In 2013, Digital Playspace developed a new feature that allows its users to print their playhouses and toys at home on a Cube 3D Printer or have them cloud printed using 3D Systems' service.
Digital PlaySpace was founded by Jesyca Durchin and funded by angel investor Tamares in 2007. In 2009 Mattel Digital Network featured Digital Dollhouse and the results were stunning with enormous appeal to girls and moms.
"We are excited to have Jesyca and her entire Digital PlaySpace team join our Cubify platform, enabling millions of new users to connect with family, friends and favorite brands in more immersive and socially creative ways," said the Chief Marketing Office of 3D Systems, Cathy Lewis, in the press release. "Digital PlaySpace's ability to customize and rapidly publish mobile and web 3D printable content provides a differentiated value proposition for brands and consumers alike."
As a producer, Jesyca has created and produced games, films and rides for leading brands such as Mattel Entertainment, Buena Vista Games, Walt Disney Imagineering, Walt Disney Home Video, and Mattel Interactive. She said,
"We are thrilled to integrate our virtual and actual play experiences directly into the 3DS Cubify platform. Our vision is to deliver a '3D PlaySpace' for everyone. The immersiveness and fun of our PlaySpace experience enhances brand recall and loyalty, enabling brands and retailers to connect with consumers in a whole new way. We designed Digital PlaySpace from the bottom-up for publishing flexibility and scalability, and 3DS is the perfect home for our growth."
