Popular 3D printing service and marketplace Shapeways is instructing all of its users to reset their account passwords in the face of a possible data breach. The warning was issued on Tuesday July 26th, 2016.
According to Shapeways, the company became aware of a possible security breach on its servers and is investigating unauthorized access to its online systems. The breach may have resulted in user names, email addresses, and shipping addresses being made vulnerable and accessible to hackers. Fortunately, however, any credit card or payment information was not accessed as that information is securely stored elsewhere, says the company.
For those with designs and 3D printing files on the Shapeways platform, the company has also stated that no model files were accessed or breached. Additionally, while no “actual misuse” of user information has been detected as of yet, and while passwords on the Shapeways server are protected with a hash, Shapeways is advising each of its users to update their password information just to be safe.
If your Shapeways password is the same on other websites, the 3D printing service also suggests changing your password on those as well. An email sent by Shapeways CEO and founder Peter Weijmarshausen to Shapeways users also stated: “We encourage you to use strong passwords and not to reuse your Shapeways password on other sites.”
The New York based 3D printing service and marketplace is currently investigating the breach with the help of law enforcement and reports that it is reviewing and updating its security procedures with due diligence. For any concerned users, or for anyone who thinks their information may have been illicitly used, Shapeways advises them to contact service@shapeways.com.
Fortunately, it seems that Shapeways is treating the breach seriously and is taking all necessary steps to making their online platform secure again. To change your Shapeways password, simply log into your account, and select the change password option under your account settings. If you log in to Shapeways through Google or Facebook, however, your information should still be secure.
